The Turtles Are Done and Ready for the Indiana National Guard Youth Camp

This is the sixth year that I have scroll sawn small turtle blanks (6" x 8") for the National Guard Youth Camp.

The Camp is for the youth of the National Guard members. They paint and decorate the turtles in preparation for the Annual Turtle races.. A hole has been drilled at the top (Head) of the turtle for a string to pass thru. One end of the string is tied to a start point about 25 ft away and the racer holds the other end. By pulling on the string the turtle flops its way to the racer.
Of course several racers compete at one time so the action is competitive and fun.

250 turtles were drawn and sawed this year. Glad to do my part for the kids.

Tornado Photographs

May 27, 1908.

Returning from Physical Therapy, Penny and I noticed the clouds and sky was unusual in coloring. We decided to drive North past our home to the higher ground at Harbstreit Hill to see what was going on with the weather.

At Wichman's Market we saw several cars parked and all were looking to the West. At a quick glance saw the funnel cloud to the west. Camera at hand made a couple of shots and decided to drive to higher hills to the West. Cresting the last hill we saw the tornado touching the ground in the distance. I estimated about a mile away. Made more shots and called Mike so he could see and photograph. We went down to Edwardsport Road and turned North as that seemed the path the tornado was taking. We wanted to stay ahead a safe distance.

The rain and hail caught us quickly and lost visual contact with the tornado. We traveled North a mile or two till we could find a road East away from the wind and rain. The rain slowed down near Highway 57 and almost stopped when we returned home. Close as I ever want to be again.

Mike never was able to see the twister.
Channel 2 Weather News Featured the photograph at 6:00 PM the next day.

The Net Server went down last week and we were without service till today. Had to relocate the antenna away from the trees. Back in service and up to speed now.

Have been practicing the replacement of backgrounds and moving of heads and eyes in images. Takes time but can work wonders.
